Our groundbreaking cellar comprises pre-cooling, unique open cement fermenters and a basket press as we strived to built a cellar to suit our fruit. The grapes are specially selected and hand harvested with plenty of hands-on devotion during the vinification process. The property boasts some impressively senescent vines-the intensity and multi-faceted character evident in the Pinotage and barrel fermented Chenin Blanc are testimony to the maturity of these 30-year old bush vines. "We know what gets to the cellar because we do bunch selection in the vineyards. We want our good fruit to come through in sound, traditional wines that can be served on the best tables in the world and complement the food, not dominate it," according to Schalk. Wellington now being a traditional award winning wine area has been turned about through quite a few cellars that have taken wine making a notch up and here Welbedacht in its first two years have excelled.
The 2005 barrel fermented Chenin Blanc being selected by Neil Pendock as one of Africa's top ten wines as well as winning its class at the International Wine and Spirit competition. The 2003 Cricket Pitch winning the prestigeous 2007 Juliet Cullinan Bordeaux class against all in South Africa as well as its class at the International Wine show held in Londen. The 2005 Welbedacht Pinotage winning the heavily contested 2007 Juliet Cullinan Pinotage class. With plenty more gold medals and International category winning awards in its inventory Welbedacht has become viniculturally a leader in South Africa.
Schalk believes more is to come as the Welbedacht Hat Trick 2006 was named the Best Red Blend out of South Africa in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2009 held in London.
If you are a person with artistic or intellectual tendencies, who lives and acts with no regard for conventional rules of behaviour, you are a Bohemian. This wine is for you and like-minded people. We believe there is only one cultivar that can carry the Bohemian name and that is Syrah! The wine makers’ art involved with this wine is, that we allowed the Syrah fruit, grown on our Estates' award winning slopes, made and bottled in our ground breaking cellar, to dictate to us what processes to use, from the vine into the wine - worthy of a discerning Bohemian like you! Take care as Bohemians can be adventurers, vagabonds and bon vivant, and this Syrah can exaggerate this behaviour!
This classically styled Cape Blend of 50% Pinotage, 35% Syrah and 15% Merlot shows layers of ripe red and black cherries with orange peel and dark chocolate, delicately laced together by sweet cedar and oak spice. The palate is rich with lively acidity and lingering flavours of violets, lavender and coconut.
A complex nose full to bursting with ripe juicy plums, black current and sweet liquorice, supported by cloves, coconut and black pepper.
This nose expands on the palate with intense but fine grained tannins. A peppery freshness with a toasted nuttiness is softened by subtle vanilla and beeswax undertones.
Although the Burger family has become synonymous with rugby and Schalk Snr and Schalk Jnr are only the eighth father and son to both wear the Springbok Jersey, their first love has always been for the exceptionally intriguing game of cricket.
Coupled with their love and passion for the soil and for farming, Welbedacht’s first release is an ode to the role that terroir plays in the ancient arts of fine winemaking and playing the game of cricket.
As a measure of this passion we cut and nestled our cricket oval into the same terroir as our beloved vineyards and named our first release “Cricket Pitch.”
A massive vineous concentration of sweet strawberries, ripe red cherries and concentrated black current confiture, rendered mysterious by an infusion of aromatic tobacco, fresh liquorice, spicy cloves and dark chocolate.
This voluptuous nose is balanced by a long and well structured palate of intense but fine grained tannins with a spicy liquorice freshness and softened by subtle vanilla and juicy blueberry.

A unique style of Chenin Blanc. The wine is dry with a high level of perceptual sweetness, moderate, well-integrated wood, fresh fruit and a long finish. To be enjoyed as an aperitif or with Mediterranean foods and other interesting, even spicy, dishes.
Dark with vibrant violet tinges, a fusion of freshly picked redberries, showing intense cherry and rasberry interlaced with sweet oak aromas of vanilla, cocoa and smoked meat. The palate is rich and ripe followed by a delightful lingering sensation of cherry, dark chocolate, cinnamon and crushed black pepper.
Intense but elegant, the wine has a firm structure with a superbly long finish. The balance of this wine allows us to enjoy its current flirtatious liveliness, but will soften pleasurably over the next five years.
This wine was made from fruit selected from two south facing vineyards on Welbedacht estate. 50% of the fruit comes from a 25 year old block and 50% from a 4 year old block. The older vineyard brings concentration and elegance to the blend while the younger vineyard adds vibrant acidity and freshness.
