The Cellar

WELBEDACHT WINE ESTATE IN WELLINGTON IS ONE OF THOSE PLACES YOU SIMPLY HAVE TO VISIT. The laid-back custodians of this wine tourism destination gem, the Burger family, are rolling out the red carpet for wine lovers. Their passion and pride is evident, as is this ”switched on” team’s meticulous attention to detail. There is probably no more apt way to describe the set-up at Welbedacht, home of Schalk Burger & Sons Wines, than: “love is in the detail”.

In 2000, Schalk Sr decided to pursue his dream of producing his very own range of wines. Four years passed before permission was granted for the building of the cellar and tasting room. The unique cellar has been carefully designed to meet the winemaking team’s exacting standards. The new cellar, which has capacity for 1200 tons, was first used for the 2005 harvest. Of the two farms’ production, 1200 tons was vinified by themselves during the last season. Among their first releases were a 2005 barrel-fermented Chenin Blanc, 2005 barrel-fermented Chardonnay, 2003 Merlot, 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2003 Bordeaux blend, Cricket Pitch.

In 2009 the cellar was enlarged to 1200 ton capacity and the farm now boasts 18 different cultivars being:
