An ABSA Top Ten Pinotage to be loved...

16 September 2010

It is with great pride that Schalk Burger and Sons, the proprietors of the Welbedacht Wine Estate, accepted the ABSA Top Ten Pinotage Award for their 2008 Welbedacht Estate Pinotage. Proprietor Schalk Burger stated: “It is our first wine under our new Estate label, launched this month, that has achieved an accolade and all kudos go to our wonderful terroir and our cellar master Jacques Wentzel.” The 2006 Welbedacht Pinotage was runner-up in the 2008 competition.

There were 133 high quality entries this year and the expert panel which consisting of well known judges such as Duimpie Bayly, Dave Hughes, Dawid Molyneux-Berry, Jonathan Steyn had their work cut out to select the Top 10.

Welbedacht was also the only entry representing Wellington, which last month was named South Africa’s Top Terroir Wine Area, and whereas Welbedacht played a major role in the area obtaining this title having produced 3 out of the 7 national finalist wines – these being the Welbedacht Chenin Blanc, Welbedacht Merlot and the well known flagship wine, Welbedacht Cricket Pitch.

The Pinotage block for the 2008 Welbedacht Estate Pinotage is a 21 year old Bush Vine block on decomposed granite soils where just the best grapes are hand selected for this lovely wine.

An ecstatic Marketing and Sales Manager Tiaan Burger had the following to say: “These grapes were specially selected and hand harvested with plenty of hands-on devotion during the vinification process. The Estate boasts some impressively senescent soils and this is prevalent in the intensity and multi-faceted character the 2008 Pinotage.

What makes this wine ever so more special is the divine coincidence that the fruit was harvested on Valentine’s Day (14 February 2008)!! We can truly lay claim to the fact that it was made with love!!”
